The Azores are a Portuguese archipelago, autonomous region and subregion in the Atlantic Ocean. In 2021, the region had 236,657 inhabitants and a population density of 106 inhabitants per km². The region covers an area of 2,351 km², divided into 1 subregion, 19 municipalities and 155 parishes. The regional capital is Ponta Delgada, the largest city in the region, with 68,809 inhabitants in the entire municipality and 29,622 in the urban area.

The Azores comprise nine larger and several smaller islands, located 1,369 km west of mainland Europe (Cabo da Roca). The shortest distance from the island of Flores to North America (Newfoundland, Canada) is 1,930 km, while the distance to New York is approximately 3,600 km.

Administratively, the Azores collectively form an autonomous region of Portugal, the Região Autónoma dos Açores, and are therefore part of the European Union.
